THE FOURTH SOCRATES CAFE IN MOSTAR: I KNOW THAT I KNOW NOTHING

The topic of the fourth Socrates Cafe in Mostar, held on November 28th, 2019, was Socrates' maxim: "I know that I know nothing." Irma Marić, who is professor at the Faculty of Humanities at the "Džemal Bijedić" University in Mostar, inquired together with participants what is the purpose of education and how much are we prepared to realistically see how much we know. Self-reflection and self-criticism are essentially absent, the school promotes mere reproduction of knowledge, and individuals are not allowed to be in a position of not knowing something.

"Do we know anything after elementary and high school?" - they wondered. Education should empower a person for self-sustainability, not only economically but also emotionally, in order to feel happy and satisfied. In their estimation, schools do very little to develop life skills of the pupils. The problem is also seen in the fact that we still think that the state has a duty to offer solutions, as it was in the previous system, and we are now unprepared for self-initiative and proactive action.
